Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge supports the sensitization of HIV/AIDS, child immunization and maternal care, through various partnerships and its in-house clinic. The Lodge has recently embarked on another health issue plaguing the community. Under the ethos of the Serena Wellness Program that aims to promote health and wellbeing, Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge and Lions Club of Arusha jointly organized a free eye camp on 24th June 2018 from 9.00am – 3.00pm at Kirurumo Lutheran Health Centre in Manyara area.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that at least one percent of Tanzania’s population is affected by vision impairment. And over 22,000 people live with avoidable blindness however, lack resources to access timely treatment.

Just like other senses, sight helps us connect with our environment, better perceive our reality and can improve the holistic quality of life. The eye camp received quite a lot of foot traffic and benefitted a total of 379 members of the local community of which 257 people went through a vision screening process while another 122 persons were given spectacles. Patients with cataracts and other eye serious ailments were referred to St. Elizabeth Hospital and Moshi Referral Hospital.

Lions Club also donated a 29-inch television to Imani Orphanage Center and a tree planting activity was also carried out to commemorate the day with 60 trees being planted and an additional 240 trees planted during the last week of June 2018 by Serena Hotels.

To strengthen this initiative, the Lions Club of Arusha has opened a new branch club by the name of Lions Club of Lake Manyara and 5 Staff from Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge have been inspired to become members in this Club.
