5 Destinations to celebrate #World Elephant Day with Serena Hotels

African elephants are the world’s largest land mammals and among one of the most intelligent creatures with complex consciousness, excellent memory, and emotions. These mammals roam freely in Africa’s savannahs and some of the most popular national parks and game reserves. In Africa, elephants share the same ecosystem with human beings and share quite a myriad of similarities with the homosapiens; this may be one of the reasons why elephants have a strong cultural significance with human beings. Despite their large size, elephants are known as ‘Gentle Giants’ and scientists refer to them as ‘keystone species as they play a significant role in maintaining the ecological balance of their habitat.

Conservation efforts to save and protect these majestic creatures have paid off in the last two decades, as the populations are now stable and growing. On 12th August every year, the world celebrates all efforts to protect and preserve the elephants.

A day will not suffice to spread the awareness on the importance of protecting elephants but the conservation efforts take place every day. And in case you would like to sight the elephants in their natural habitat and learn more about them perhaps during a game drive…we have suggested 5 destinations in Africa where you intimately interact with the majestic giants.

Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park in DRC, has recently experienced an influx of nearly 600 elephants that moved from Uganda’s grasslands. Before their arrival, Virunga’s elephant population was only 120 because of poaching and violence which diminished their numbers. Since the elephant migration in August, the elephants seem to be at ease in the two-million-acre expanse of steppes, savannas, volcanoes, and snowfields along the DRC’s eastern border- Virunga which is vulnerable to poaching and militia attacks. The return of the elephants in Virunga means that the area is now safer for them. The government and even private organizations are working together to ensure the elephants remain safe from the hands of the poachers as well as humans because of the destructive nature of these large grazers. Communities near the park are also being educated on the importance of elephants in the ecosystem especially in the long run. Stay at Goma Serena Hotel or Lake Kivu Serena Hotel #WorldElephantDay
